After playing for a short period of time in a dream of the protagonist in the amusement park in Silent Hill, the player is introduced to Heather Mason in the restaurant "Happy Burger", which is located within a shopping center. Before he could leave, she finds an investigator named Douglas Cartland, who says he has some information about his past. Heather flees him, escaping through the window of a women's restroom. However, to get to another part of the mall, she discovers that he is totally abandoned and infested with strange monsters. On their way, Heather is a priestess of the cult of Silent Hill, who identifies herself as Claudia, telling Heather to "remember her, and her true form." She also mentions that there is to "lead them" Paradise "with blood-stained hands." Suddenly, Heather feels an unbearable headache, which makes getting into an alternative version of the shopping center. She returns to the "real world" after confronting a creature called "Split Worm" (the head of the mall). She again finds Douglas, who confesses that he was sent by Claudia to find it.
